Lesson 3.3: Family Music Making

Questions to be Answered
How can a shared artistic expression, like music making, tie a family together?
Can you think of other family music makers like the Matney Sisters?
Do students’ families or households have musical traditions?

Suggested Methods

  1. Read the description of the Matney Sisters in the liner notes, and play the cut, “Silent Singer,” from the CD. Have the students read the lyrics, either as a class or individually, and discuss the rhyme pattern and musical style.
  2. Discuss with students the ways in which their family shares musical traditions. If students claim their family is not musical, remind them that just about everyone sings “Happy Birthday to You.” Does your family add any verses? What lullabies did parents or grandparents sing? Did anyone in your family ever teach you some silly songs? Does your family sing religious or holiday tunes together?

Student Activity

Write your own lyrics about your family, household, or friends that fit the pattern and style of the “Silent Singer.”

Home/Community Connection

Check out the Iowa Folk & Traditional Arts Roster for a family music-making group in your area. Have them perform in class and talk about the importance of music in their family.

Student/Senior Citizen Exchange

Seniors may recall a number of family singing groups popular when they were younger. This exercise will be an enjoyable jumping-off point to a nostalgic musical journey. If possible, have seniors bring in examples of their favorite family singing groups on records (see if you can find an older record player that plays 45s and 78s!). Have a senior teach a student or groups of students a song he or she knows, learned from his or her family. Use the song to generate a discussion of family music traditions and how they have changed.
