Lesson 3.3: Family Music Making

Music has many functions, not just commercial entertainment.

The Waring family from Jessup gathers weekly to play bluegrass music.

Within a family, music may be used to lull a baby to sleep, or to celebrate a birthday or other rite of passage. Music may help get a family over tough times or be a form of household recreation. In this context, music can express how family members feel about each other.

Folklife Background

The Matney sisters grew up in the Sioux City area. They perform country tunes, gospel music, and original compositions. They learned their music under the guidance of their father, who sometimes accompanies them on guitar.
